Winstanley Community Primary School

Everyone, Every Day

English

In our school the English Curriculum has an important place in our teaching.  It unites the essential skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, enabling pupils to make sense of our world.  The acquisition of good English skills allows children to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.  Good quality Literature plays a key role in such development and is placed at the heart of the English Curriculum at Winstanley CP School.

What do English lessons look like in our school?

In Early Years, the teaching of English is broken into small segments and is taught throughout the day.  There is a mix of direct teaching with teachers and teaching assistants and self led activities in the continual provision. Phonics lessons are taught every day and children take part in a weekly guided reading session.

Children in Key Stages 1 and 2 have a daily English lesson.  Across the week this will include a range of teaching activities including phonics (daily for Key Stage 1) and spelling, reading and comprehension, sentence building and vocabulary manipulation, grammar and handwriting practise.  All children take part in a weekly guided reading session.

In all classes there is a strong focus on literature, with teachers using high quality texts to engage learners and promote understanding.

From Early Years to Year 6 teachers plan lots of opportunities for children to practise their writing skills within other curriculum areas and not just in English lessons.
