Early Years Foundation Stage: Home Learning

As part of our transition programme we want  to  learn about each of our unique children. This is the start of our partnership with you and our home learning offer.

Consequently, before your child starts nursery or reception we ask you to work with them to complete their 'All About Me' booklet which can be viewed below. This provides an insight into their likes, dislikes, hobbies, interests, family, preferred learning styles, experiences and any skills family members may like to share.

We use the 'Ages and Stages Questionnaire' (ASQ) which provides information regarding the 'age related expectations' we would expect to observe at any given age. It also provides information about the child's medical history and behaviour. This is analysed by class teachers to help make informed decisions about next steps in learning and development.

All children are signed up to access 'Seesaw' and from Autumn 2020 'Tapestry'. These apps enable effective home / school communication.

Nursery and reception staff introduce shared reading to foster a love of books, develop communication and literacy skills to support the relationship between home, the child and school.

As children make progress, phonics homework is sent home each week. This includes a phonics home reader and corresponding home learning activities. We have recently introduced 'Rigby Stars'   e-books for children in Reception. Again these are matched to children's developing phonic ability.

Early Years children may also bring home additional activities linked to learning in the setting, for example numbers in order activities, celebrating festivals, making, baking, investigations or physical activity.

Staff actively encourage families to send 'WOW' notes to celebrate special moments for example, 'the first time they...' or to share achievements e.g. certificates, awards or trophies.

Each week a child receives the class 'Star of the Week' award. A certificate is sent home to share our pride in the child's receipt of the trophy.

Please take a  look at this selection of information from our home learning offer.
