Our EYFS Curriculum
In the Early Years at Winstanley, we nurture and support each child to develop a love of learning using the four principles of the EYFS.
A Unique Child
- Positive Relationships
- Enabling Environments
- Learning and Development
Teaching and Learning is underpinned by the Characteristics of Effective Learning:
- Playing and exploring: children investigate and experience things, and have a go
- Active learning: children concentrate, continue to try if they encounter difficulties and enjoy their achievements
- Creating and thinking critically: children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
Areas of Learning and Development
The EYFS is made up three prime areas of learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
There are also four specific areas of learning which are:
- Literacy
- Maths
- Understanding of the World
- Expressive Art and Design
None of these areas can be delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other. All areas are delivered through a balance of adult led and child-initiated activities. Children’s deeper play is supported by experienced and interested adults playing, narrating, scaffolding and supporting alongside. In each area there are Early Learning Goals that define the expectations for most children to reach by the end of the EYFS.
To ensure that our Early Years’ curriculum is effective, it is carefully structured with quality teaching which builds upon the children’s existing skills and knowledge.
Learning is promoted through purposeful play and teachers plan for the needs and interests of all children giving them the opportunity to learn about the world around them and access rich and stimulating experiences in the well-planned-out and well-organised learning environment both indoors and outdoors.
